East Valley Baseball: Falcons hope to replicate 2021 postseason run

Last year, Los Fresnos made it all the way to the Region IV final, losing 3-2 to Smithson Valley.

The Falcons begin this year’s postseason against Mission High.

“All of our coaches put in a great game plan for us to get here,” Los Fresnos senior pitcher Matthew Padilla said. “We have a big goal, and this is part of the process of getting to where we want to be.”

Padilla also said Mission High is a great team and that the Falcons are excited about the matchup. Los Fresnos finished the District 32-6A season undefeated, capturing the district title.

“It felt great,” Falcons senior catcher Diego Cantu said. “Especially because people did not pick us to win the district. We were doubted from the beginning. I think we proved a lot of people wrong and right.”

Smaller schools will begin the action today. La Feria, the second-place team from District 32-4A, heads to Alice to open their series. Santa Rosa will play host to Monte Alto in a single-elimination game.

On Friday, the East Valley will be littered with playoff games. San Benito, the third-place team from District 32-6A, takes on Edinburg Vela at home. Harlingen High won a playoff game over Rivera to enter the playoffs and will play host to PSJA High.

Game 2 for both series will be Saturday. If San Benito goes to Game 3, they will play Monday. Harlingen High will run it back after Game 2 if need be.

Brownsville Veterans Memorial begin its series with Sharyland High on Friday at home, and Porter will take on Sharyland Pioneer.

Brownsville Veterans is ranked No. 18 in the THSB state poll, and Porter is No. 23.

Pioneer is fifth in the THSB ranking and seventh in THSBCA poll.

Brownsville Veterans and Porter will play back-to-back games Saturday against their opponents if needed.

The Raymondville Bearkats will play host to the opening game of their series with Corpus Christi Calallen on Friday. Calallen is the second-ranked team in the THSBCA polls. Raymondville will travel Saturday to Calallen to finish the series.

Lyford begins its series with Donna IDEA on Friday at home. On Saturday, the District 31-3A champion Bulldogs will head to Donna to finish the series.
