District 32-4A, 31-4A track & field athletes seek regional slots

District 32-4A and 31-4A track & field athletes competed this week in Alice with a shot at the regional meet on the line.

The La Feria girls track team is the area champion, finishing the meet with 155 points to defeat Corpus Christi Calallen by 11 points.

La Feria’s Liana Navarro continued her great running season. The long-distance runner outpaced the field by one minute to claim gold in the 3,200-meter run and won the mile run by a comfortable 22 seconds. Navarro finished second in the 800, losing by a few seconds.

La Feria also picked up points from Mia Trevino in the 1,600 and 3,200. Trevino finished second in the mile and third in the two-mile run. And, Kaya Dickerson and Kiera Castillo finished first and second in the long jump. Dickerson also placed third in the 200.

More points for La Feria came from a second-place finish by Ashley Reath in the triple jump. Angelina Rodriguez finished third in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles events. La Feria finished second in every relay race.

Port Isabel’s Madison Ramos cleared 5 feet 4 inches, outjumping second place by four inches. Ramos, the third-place finisher in the high jump at state last year, is one to watch at the regional meet.

Grulla’s Fatima Karyme Montes took home gold in shot put and second in discus. Rio Hondo’s Alyssa Silguero came in second in the shot put.

Grulla’s Yoali De La Garza won the pole vault, and La Feria’s Thalia Conde took second.

La Feria’s Evan Torres is also a top distance runner in the area. He held off a tough competitor from Corpus Christi Tuloso-Midway in the 1,600- and 3,200.

Isiah Longoria is the pole vault champion, Joshua Marquez finished third in the 3,200 and Joaquin Trevino brought back bronze in the 300 hurdles for La Feria.

Raymondville’s Bryen Robles won the 400 and placed third in the high jump. The Bearkats’ 1,600 relay team came in third, only two seconds off of first place, and Christian Gonzalez took second in the 110 and 300 hurdles.

Port Isabel’s Daniel Zamarron took third in the triple jump, and David Hernandez came in second in the pole vault and was third in the 110 hurdles.

Hidalgo’s Saul Hernandez won the shot put. Dustin Earhart came in second in the discus and third in the shot put.
