Mustangs narrowly miss out on state trip

HARLINGEN — Golfers from the Rio Grande Valley are competing in their regional golf tournaments this week, and the boys wrapped up their tournaments Tuesday.

McAllen Memorial missed out on a chance to qualify for the state tournament by two strokes, finishing fourth in the Region IV-5A golf meet.

Dylan Villarreal (150) finished the tournament in seventh place after shooting a 73 on Tuesday. Villarreal finished three strokes behind the individual qualifying places. Fellow Mustangs golfer Esteban Gonzalez (153) tied for 11th. Daniel Garza (159), Ryan Avila (164) and Maverick Erickson (175) comprised the fourth-place team.

Sharyland High also had a good day on the course. The team finished seventh and had strong showings from Octavio Cantu (155), Joshua Rios (161), Nicholas Vantine (162), Nicolas Trevino (168) and Ander Erana (171), all of whom finished in the top 50.

Brownsville Veterans Memorial junior Alejandro Ramirez (152) was in contention all day to qualify for state, but the District 32-5A MVP came up a little short. His 74 in the first round had him only two strokes behind the leader and in an individual qualifying spot, but he finished Day 2 with a 78.

Brownsville Veterans, the District 32-5A championship team that is comprised of juniors, finished ninth. Christian Ramirez (158) the district’s individual champion, shot an 80 on Day 1 and followed it up with a 78, finishing in a tie for 22nd. Gonzalo De La Lastra (178), Ben Quidlat (179) and Misael Conde (197) complete the Chargers’ team.

Donna High’s Elias Lara (164), Anthony Sanchez (167), Damian Ocanas (179), Joey Reyna (184), Nick Mata (184) finished 11th as a team.

Mission Veterans Memorial’s Ayden De Leon (165), Ever Torres (173), Valentin Ocana (194), Kyle Gerlach (197) and Daniel Elliott (206) placed 12th in the team standings, and La Joya Palmview’s Ignacio Garcia (181), Manuel Flores (185), Tyler Ortiz (186), Austin Ortiz (194) and David Leal (208) finished 13th as a group.

McAllen High’s Ben De La Garza (155) and Sharyland Pioneer’s Ryan Montoya (155) tied for 16th with Cantu.

Weslaco East’s Joshua Contreras (174), Roma’s Manuel Olivarez (175), Rio Grande City’s Steven Perez (186) and Mercedes’ Marco Gonzalez (198) also competed from the Valley.

In Class 4A, Grulla’s Andy Hernandez Jr. (179), Isaac Garcia (188), Jaime Eladio Villareal Jr. (182), Fernando Macias-Medina (202) and Angel Ontiveros (219) finished the tournament in 13th place.

Raymondville finished 14th. Christopher Guerrero (184) cracked the top 50. Jayson Cantu (191), Jayden Garza (206), John Rubalcaba (216) and Hunter Posas (205) completed the team from Raymondville.

La Feria’s Joshua Gonzalez (184) and Hidalgo’s Aaron Castillo (212) also competed from the area.
