The Edinburg North Cougars and Mercedes Tigers highlighted a busy night of high school softball Friday night across the Rio Grande Valley with a pair of walk-off wins

On a busy night of non-district action across the Rio Grande Valley’s softball landscape, two teams earned a pair of walk-off wins.

Edinburg North started off an exciting night of high school softball with a tight game against Laredo United.

North, the 20th-ranked Class 6A team in the state according to the latest Texas Girls Coaches Association rankings, fell behind early after a three-run top of the first inning by the Longhorns.

The Cougars came roaring back, however, thanks in large part to the bat of Kaylee O’Bryan who drove in three runs as part of a 2-for-3 night at the plate.

O’Bryan came up to bat once again with the bases loaded during the bottom of the seventh and drew a walk-off walk to complete a dramatic comeback and a 6-5 victory for Edinburg North.

Mercedes, meanwhile, battled back and forth with Mission High seemingly all night.

The Eagles owned a 4-3 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Tigers plated a run with their backs against the wall to force extra innings.

Both teams scored during the eighth and held one another scoreless during the ninth. Then Mercedes’ Bridgette Sanchez came up clutch in the bottom of the 10th inning, delivering a game-clinching RBI double with no outs to seal a 6-5 win for the Tigers.

DONNA, PALMVIEW EARN LOPSIDED RIVALRY VICTORIES

The Donna High Bravettes earned a huge win over crosstown rival Donna North to conclude an impressive run through non-district play.

The Bravettes clobbered the Chiefs for the second time this season, winning 15-3 on the road Friday night. The victory marks Donna’s third in its last three games with the start of district competition right around the corner.

Donna High will open its District 32-5A slate at home against Brownsville Pace at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

La Joya Palmview also battered crosstown rival La Joya Juarez-Lincoln in a 13-0 blowout that lasted only five innings.

The huge rivalry-game win lifts the Lobos to 2-0 and increases their run differential against opponents to 19-1 this season. Palmview opens District 30-5A play on the road against Rio Grande City at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

HARLINGEN, RIO GRANDE CITY KEEP ROLLING

After a shutout victory over La Joya High to open the season, Rio Grande City found its footing again during its District 30-5A opener.

The Rattlers rebounded from a double-header loss to Mission by kicking off district competition in dominant fashion, clobbering Laredo Cigarroa 22-1.

The win moves RGC to 2-2 on the season and represents more offensive production than the Rattlers had in their first three games combined. Rio Grande City will return to action Tuesday to host Palmview.

Harlingen High, meanwhile, continued one of the hottest starts across the Rio Grande Valley on Friday night in Edinburg.

The Cardinals downed Edinburg High 14-2 as the team’s lights-out pitching continued and its bats came alive. April Garcia led the way offensively for Harlingen with 5 RBIs, while the Cardinals held their opponents to two runs or less for the third consecutive game.

The Cards will face their biggest test of the season so far when they host the seventh-ranked Harlingen South Hawks in a rivalry clash at 6:30 p.m. Monday.
