The RGV Vipers held Agua Caliente to just 14 third-quarter points and hung on down the stretch for a 99-95 victory Thursday in the bubble at the Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando, Fla.

After giving up 42 points Wednesday during the first quarter en route to a 132-105 loss to 905 Raptors, Vipers head coach Mahmoud Abdelfattah was more than happy with the defensive performance.

“We held them to 14 points in the third. That’s unbelievable,” the second-year coach said. “In the second half, the guys knew it was winning time. We kept them to 37 points in the second half. This was a team win; everybody who played didn’t miss a beat on the defensive end. It was a great job.”

Kevin Porter scored 21 points, dished out seven assists and didn’t commit a turnover in 31 minutes of playing time to lead the Vipers. Five different Vipers scored in double figures and three — Kenyon Martin Jr. (14 points, 12 rebounds), Ray Spalding (16 points, 14 rebounds) and Brodric Thomas (18 points, 10 rebounds) — registered double-doubles. Martin also had five of 12 Vipers’ blocks.

“Ray and KJ were unbelievable, switching on the matchups and with their coverages,” Abdelfattah said. “KJ had multiple blocks coming off the weak side and saved a couple of layups. And their second half rebounding was phenomenal. It was an all-around team effort.

Porter gave the Vipers a 94-93 lead with less than a minute left, but Agua Caliente regained a 95-94 lead. Porter assisted on a dunk by Spalding for a 96-95 advantage and following a missed shot by the Clippers, Porter sank two free throws and Martin added another to clinch the first win of a 15-game season.

“This is going to go by so quickly,” Abdelfattah said. “I told them we can’t let a win of loss effect your preparation of the game because the games are going to keep coming.”

The Vipers improved to 1-1, while the Clippers fell to 0-1. RGV plays at 2 p.m. Saturday against the Fort Wayne Mad Ants.
