The Edinburg High Bobcats continue to climb the Texas Girls Coaches Association statewide basketball rankings amidst a dominant run through district competition and are among five teams across the Rio Grande Valley to earn spots in the TGCA’s updated Class 3A-6A Top 25 polls Monday.

Edinburg High (13-3) moved up in the TGCA’s Class 6A poll for the second consecutive week, jumping from No. 16 to No. 14 after resuming district play following a two-week, program-wide quarantine to begin the new year.

The Bobcats beat crosstown rival Edinburg Vela on Friday and rolled to a dominant victory at La Joya Juarez-Lincoln on Saturday in their first two games of 2021. Edinburg High became the RGV’s lone representative in the TGCA Class 6A poll after Los Fresnos (12-4) fell from No. 12 out of the rankings entirely after losing to Harlingen South and Weslaco High in District 32-6A action last week.

The Bobcats will play three District 31-6A tilts in three days this week beginning with a home game against Mission High on Wednesday and road games at Edinburg Economedes and La Joya High on Thursday and Friday, respectively, all set for 7 p.m. tipoffs.

Brownsville Veterans (14-2) stayed put at No. 25 as the Valley’s only team in the Class 5A poll after eking out a two-point home victory over District 32-5A foe Edcouch-Elsa on Friday. The Chargers are set to return to action when they travel to face Brownsville Lopez at 6:30 tonight.

Rio Hondo (7-0), the Valley’s only remaining unbeaten girls basketball team, ascended to No. 13 across the state in the TGCA’s updated Class 4A poll, making it the Rio Grande Valley’s highest-ranked squad at any classification level.

The Bobcats, who are one of three undefeated Class 4A teams in the TGCA rankings, are set to play back-to-back games at Hidalgo and at home against Port Isabel tonight and Wednesday, respectively, in District 32-4A action. Both contests will tip off at 5:30 p.m.

Donna IDEA (14-3) and Lyford (14-4), meanwhile, both earned spots in the TGCA’s Class 3A rankings for the second consecutive week.

Donna IDEA ascended to No. 20 in the state, advancing four spots after earning its first TGCA ranking in school history last week, while the Bulldogs fell five spots this week down to No. 25.

The Titans will host Pharr IDEA at 6 tonight in their next District 31-3A game and travel to Brownsville Hanna for a non-district game at noon Saturday. Lyford will host Edinburg IDEA in District 31-3A competition at 7 p.m. Friday.
