A red flag warning has been issued for most of the Rio Grande Valley through 6 p.m. Thursday.

The National Weather Service Brownsville/Rio Grande Valley reports “elevated to critical fire weather conditions are expected across the majority of Deep South Texas, with the exception of immediate coastal locations, this afternoon with low relative humidity values and moderate to strong northerly or north-northwesterly winds in the wake of this morning’s cold front. Burning of any kind of should be avoided.”

A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now, or will shortly.

The red flag warning includes Starr, Hidalgo, inland Willacy, and inland Cameron counties.

Winds of north 15 to 25 mph are anticipated, with occasional gust of up to 35 mph.

The NWS reports any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is not recommended.
