LETERS: Money not free

What a problem Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and gang gave the American people when they passed the American relief bill. To people who are uneducated or undereducated, getting a $1,400 check for doing nothing seems a great deal. However, these people do not understand economics and don’t really look at the consequences of getting “free” money.

To begin with, this country does not have the $1.9 trillion this bill will cost. So they had to borrow the money and one day this money will have to be paid back with interest. Granted, present-day Americans will not live to see the day when this bill comes due, but someday it will have to be paid by Americans who are yet to be born. So in essence, Pelosi and gang (including our congressmen) voted to pass this bill and have our future generations pay for it.

Now let’s look at this bill a little closer. $1.9 trillion divided by 330 million Americans equals more than $5,000 for every man, woman and child in the United States. Out of this $1.9 trillion, only 10% will be spent to address problems created by the pandemic. The other 90% is what is known as “pork,” such as bailing out the state of California. For those who do not know, California is in deep financial trouble as a result of bureaucrats voting themselves fat salaries and fat pensions and now the rest of the nation will pay for their incompetence.

The people in California are really happy with Pelosi coming to their rescue and I am sure she will be reelected again, just as she has been for the past 40 years. Needless to say I, as a Texan, am not too happy with our local congressman voting for a bill that put every American in debt by $5,000 and turning around and giving some of us $1,400.

My question to our congressman is, if you are putting me in debt of the tune of $5,000, why didn’t you give me the entire $5,000? The he comes on TV and tells us what a great guy he is by giving us the $1,400 and most people are really happy. But the only people who have an understanding of economics and study this bill in depth that Pelosi and the people who voted with her saddled all Americans who work for a living and pay taxes.
