LETTER: Truth and balance

I just finished reading the “news” article with the headline “Casting Doubt” in the March 15 Valley Star. Since it was on page one, I assume your editors judged it to be a news item rather than an editorial or op-ed piece. The AP writer, Will Weissert, states in the first paragraph that …”a caller launched into ‘baseless’ complaints about both parties, urging Latino listeners to not cast votes at all.

“Perez, then chairman of the Democratic Party, recognized many of the claims as talking points for…a conservative activist, Brandon Straka, who was later arrested for participating in the deadly … insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.”

Weissert then launches into a whole stream of really baseless statements about how social media and other technology is being leveraged to spread misinformation and continues with points that pictures were doctored (based on what?), quotes taken out of context (based on what?), Black Lives Matter movement had ties to witchcraft (based on what?), Biden was beholden to a cabal of socialists (based on what?). You get the point.

Is this journalism? Many of your “news” articles seem to come from the leftist perspective and the other side is demeaned with words like “baseless” “without evidence” or “contrary to known facts”.

If you doubt what I’m saying, look at the next article below the fold “Pelosi pledges swift work on major infrastructure package”. Is there any doubt who your paper believes to be the good guys and the bad guys? Or, the hit job on  the SD Governor and sunshine laws on page 5 but nothing about the NY and MI governors and their current problems. Or, the glowing report on how Democrats bank on relief aid; and the one about Biden’s Secretary of State Blinken and North Korea.

How about the truth and balance without editorializing … just the truth.
