State Rep. Terry Canales filed his second package of bills for the 88th Texas Legislative Session on Wednesday that focuses on improving community life and providing new opportunities.
The first of the package is House Bill 1636, which allows South Texas College to create a sixth bachelor’s degree that focuses on child and family development.
Canales also filed House Bill 1637, which encourages the construction of more trails and bike paths along the irrigation canals in the Rio Grande Valley.
“HB 1637 seeks to give irrigation districts legal protection to encourage them to help provide an important link to the outdoors, providing opportunities for recreation, exercise, and transportation,” Canales said in a news release.
He also filed two other House bills that focus on improving transportation safety and future needs.
They include HB 1638, a bill that will allow the Texas Department of Public Safety to create a 2045 committee that will focus on the future of transportation in the state.
Secondly, HB 1639 allows the Texas Transportation Commission to introduce a new program that will allow the “temporary lowering of speed in certain dangerous situations including inclement weather, traffic congestion, and road congestion,” the release stated.
