Lucia Thompson, McAllen City Comm. Dist. 1

Candidate: Lucia Thompson

Running for: McAllen City Commissioner District 1

Location: McAllen, TX

Political Statement:

Thompson has spent the last 20 years in the McAllen area serving as a board-certified attorney in family law. “Having lived in the great city of McAllen for nearly 45 years, it gives me great pleasure to announce my candidacy to serve on the McAllen City Commission.” She continued to say, “Now more than ever, it is important to ensure that our community continues to operate under principled leadership, and I am prepared to serve our community in this effort.”

Reflecting on her candidacy Thompson says, “Growing up in McAllen has been full of opportunities with a quality of life that is unmatched. I recognize that this is in large part due to our leadership, from the Mayor, to each city department and the City Commission. But just as important, it’s the great citizens of our community who have built McAllen. For those who I have yet to meet, I look forward to spending time to listen to the good people of District 1 and allow me to introduce myself.”

Thompson believes that while McAllen is the best city in Texas there is so much that can be done to continue to improve our community. As a city commissioner she intends to focus first on helping our businesses and families recover rapidly from this pandemic. She also believes that developing smart growth strategies alongside with developers can create a thriving economy and good paying jobs. She wants to see a new mobility plan with emphasis on improving our main corridor traffic and reduce congestion; as well as continue to widen and improve streets, complete drainage projects and focus on lighting problems, all with stronger inter- and intra-governmental partnerships.

She said, “McAllen needs to continue on this upward trajectory to see that our families, businesses and neighborhoods flourish creating smart initiatives without raising city taxes and burdening taxpayers.”

Thompson is a mother, a lawyer and community volunteer who was born and raised in McAllen. She received her early education by the wonderful teachers and counselors of McAllen I.S.D. and graduated from McHi. After high school, she earned her undergraduate degree from Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas and later earned her Juris Doctorate from South Texas College of Law in Houston. She is a member of the Texas Academy of Family Law Specialists, Hidalgo County Bar Association, Hidalgo County Women’s Bar, Lamar Academy Friends of IB and the McAllen Leadership Class of 2006.

“My education is probably the most important journey I have experienced; and then practicing family law and volunteering in McAllen for the last 20 years has taught me so much about the importance of family and community. It has given me a well-rounded perspective that will serve me well as a city commissioner. I understand that every one of my decisions will impact someone’s life or business. I respect the significance of this responsibility and I am ready to serve District 1.”
