CORPUS CHRISTI — After cutting a four-run deficit to one during the bottom of the seventh, Weslaco High sophomore Romy Nunez stepped the plate, with the tying run sitting at third.

Nunez connected, delivering a line drive directly to right field. After San Antonio O’Connor threw Nunez out at first, first baseman Jada Munoz fired the ball to home plate.

Munoz connected with catcher Ally Garcia to convert the double play and end the series, with O’Connor defeating Weslaco 7-6 on Friday at Cabaniss Softball Field.

Weslaco’s postseason run comes to an end in the Region IV-6A finals, falling in two games to O’Connor. The Panthers finish with a 34-8 overall record.

“I’m super proud of them and their fight,” Weslaco High head coach Mario Rodriguez said. “They never quit even when we were down by three or four runs. That’s all we can really ask of them, to fight to the end. This group did that.”

Weslaco’s sophomore studs came up big for the team once again during the bottom of the seventh, helping spark Weslaco’s comeback attempt.

Sophomore Alexis Soliz opened the inning by getting to first on a line drive leading to an O’Connor error. On the ensuing at-bat, Weslaco cut it to three, with senior Katia Reyes recording an RBI single.

After senior Stacey Bautista advanced Reyes with a single, sophomore Mia Rodriguez helped bring in Weslaco High’s fifth and sixth runs, with Reyes and freshman Lola Reyes scoring on an error following a grounder to third by Rodriguez.

The comeback attempt advanced no further, with O’Connor coming up with the defensive play of the night to end the contest.

Katia Reyes took the loss for Weslaco in the circle, pitching all seven innings. She finished with seven strikeouts, and added a pair of hits and an RBI at the plate.

Despite the loss, Weslaco High’s future seems bright, with 11 of its 16 players set to return next season.

“It’s amazing. There are high expectations now,” Katia Reyes said. “I know the underclassmen will be able to push through. They were a big role on our team. Our last two hits were by sophomores. Most of them actually were. A lot of plays were made by our sophomores and junior. The team revolved our young ones. If it weren’t for them, we wouldn’t be here.”
