Letters: Commentary draws attack

Al Garcia (Feb. 6) tries to equate the current illegal immigration chaos to the biblical birth of Jesus. Although his analogy is quite stylish, it really misses the mark.

He accuses those who want illegal immigration severely restricted of being “hypocrites … pretenders, deceivers, masqueraders” because of their inability to embrace “your tired, your poor, your huddled masses ….” He wants the U.S. to further “open our hearts, our minds and our doors” and let many more people in than we already legally allow. He says we were created to someday reach a “kingdom … without walls borders, fences,” where no one is “denied entry … at the inn.”

There it is. Garcia supports the Democrat solution to combat illegal immigration — open borders. He references the “inn” to the birth of Jesus Christ. But where he misses the mark is that Jesus’ father, Joseph, was a carpenter and in all probability was willing to pay for a room at the inn. We’re not told in the Bible if there was another reason why he was denied a room at the inn other than none was available. He wasn’t looking for a freebie.

Not so nowadays — illegal immigrants don’t want to pay for their room and they expect the U.S. taxpayers to pay the bill.

In Garcia’s analogy, it seems that the immigrants expect the innkeeper (the U.S. taxpayers) to pay not only the costs of room and board, but also medical, phones, etc.

Garcia references “The New Colossus” poem written in the 1880s. It was certainly a challenging time for immigrants. Few, if any, social services were offered and mostly immigrants had to fend for themselves and not depend on the government for financial support.

Mr. Longoria bashes Biden for the hasty retreat from Afghanistan in which 13 American soldiers got killed and the military equipment left behind (Feb. 15). First, he fails to mention that Donald Trump negotiated the American withdrawal from Afghanistan before he left office, not Biden. Also, how many more American have died since then?

Also, the equipment left behind was negotiated with the Afghanistan government by Trump to they could defend themselves.

Second, what would Mr. Longoria think would happened if the U.S. had used a naval blockade in Ukraine? We would have been fighting in the war with Ukraine against Russia.

Third, Mr. Longoria needs to stop watching Fox News about the open border. Look up what an open border is. If we had an open border, then why is the apprehension of illegal immigrants up? If we had open borders there would be no apprehensions in the first place.

Mr. Longoria, you put Trump and the Republican Party up on a pedestal. During Trump’s term in office three balloons invaded American airspace, yet nothing was done or we never knew about it until now.

Joe Biden is standing strong against China and Russia. Just look at the stand he has taken with the semiconductors and refusing and making it illegal for any U.S. company to sell any materials or chips to China.

Just ask yourself: Who do you think is going to have to pay for all those tax cuts he gave all those fortune 500 companies? Do you think the average American will see any of those tax cuts, or will the executives see it in million-dollar bonuses?
