Letters: Commentary spurs opinion

On Jan. 1, our newly elected U.S. Rep. Monica De La Cruz tells us about herself and how she’s ready to go to work for the American people. Her family achieved the American Dream and she believes that everyone deserves that opportunity, too. Well, good for us!

After reading the first part of her commentary, I thought, WOW! What we have here is a genuine down-to-earth John McCain, Liz Cheney-type Republican! Her words about wanting to help people sound honest and sincere! When she stated that out-of-touch representatives in Washington, D.C., were creating issues and supporting agendas that “drastically” affect the lives of every U. S. citizen, I totally agreed!

Then, to my demise, she turns around and blames President Biden for all the problems we’re supposedly experiencing. She assures us that when she goes to D.C., she will not neglect these problems and that her words are not just empty promises and false hopes. She will take action and things will be a-changing for the better. Hmm — OK!

She didn’t elaborate on how she will accomplish her promised endeavors, but I, for one, hope she will stop wasting time blaming others for what she perceives is wrong with America. I also hope she will share her magical problem-solving solutions with President Biden and her fellow legislators. And I also hope that with an open mind she will work and compromise with her colleagues and do what’s right for all Americans in a fair and decent way!

President Biden, of course, knows that like any other rookie politician, Monica De La Cruz has a lot to learn. And considering that she’s a Republican in the midst of a breed of Republicans who are anti-women, anti-immigrant, anti-democracy, anti-everything, even anti-America she might want to reconsider what party she wishes to represent. If she fails to follow in lock-step with the Republican “destroy democracy” agenda, you can bet your brown Army boots they will come after her hard. If she thinks these people will not do to her what they did to the principled Congresswoman Liz Cheney, she needs to re-evaluate her thinking.

If Monica De La Cruz sincerely wants to fight for all Americans and if she sincerely believes in our successful 2½ centuries-old democracy, she needs to think about switching parties Now! And the same goes for all those who still support this new breed of anti-democracy Republicans.

Don’t

litter

We purchased a vacation home here. When we drive around the countryside or even in town, we are disgusted by all the trash, tires and mattresses, bottles, etc., in ditches.

We are winter Texans. In our home state of Nebraska we take pride of our towns, counties and state. In our hometown it has always been required for students to do a certain amount of community service and most of the students volunteer for roadside cleanup. It teaches them to not litter and to be respectful and proud of your community.

Just wondering if the schools here in town could do this also. We do our part and pick up trash in our neighborhood. In our Nebraska county there are also free recycling days when you can bring in old tires for disposal that are then taken to a place where they are shredded and recycled for playground mulch.

We love Texas; please do your part and not litter!
