Letters: Constitution not violated

The Second Amendment: “A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” Twenty-seven words, so misinterpreted.

The Constitution, written in 1787, begins with “We the people …,” means the government of the United States exists to serve its citizens. There was never the intent in any part of the Constitution that citizens are not protected. There is no mention of assault rifles or any type of gun in the Constitution.

Unfortunately, many present-day politicians believe that assault rifles are more important than our security and mistakenly believe the right to bear arms, Second Amendment, is more important than protecting all people living in the USA. The result: mass shootings and killing of school children, mall shootings, shootings in synagogues, churches and elsewhere,

I repeat: There is no mention of assault rifles in the Constitution. Those military killing machines are not part of the Second Amendment. Guns in 1787 were completely different than today since they were normally single-shot.

In 1934, the Thompson submachine gun was outlawed and the courts, politicians, police and everybody except criminals accepted that law. Politicians, and especially the National Rifle Association, rallied for that law.

Common sense dictates prohibiting assault rifles does not infringe on peoples’ rights to keep and bear arms. Those weapons are reserved for a well-regulated militia (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Space Force),

Trump

trashed

Debra Bolin stated in her July 26 letter that “Trump is nothing more than a liar,” but he is so much more than that. Since his grand entry into the political arena on an escalator, he has managed to persuade millions that he is exactly what America needs.

Ironically, he has become the “Escalator in Chief,” stirring up hatred, prejudice and incivility. He has been very successful at sowing division and making violence an acceptable form of political expression — at least among many of his followers.

He’s a master of deception and corruption — his history of business failures, three marriages, multiple affairs and more than a dozen allegations against him of sexual assault, matched only by a history of never attending church or showing any respect for those who do. Yet, he convinced millions of Christian followers that there’s no contradiction in supporting a man who is the exact opposite of Jesus. Never has a man so completely without scruples persuaded so many that he is god. It’s really quite amazing.

The Jan. 6 committee has now shown that he can add conspirator against the United States and instigator of the insurrection at the Capitol to his long list of dubious accomplishments. He did nothing to stop the insurrection, because it’s exactly what he wanted. He has no shame that he is responsible for the deaths and serious injuries to police officers defending our democracy. After numerous lawmakers and the vice president came within feet of falling into the hands of the rioters, Trump’s only comment was that Mike Pence had really let him down.

Donald Trump is so much more than a liar. He’s the inspiration for men like Greg Abbott and Ted Cruz, who are doing their best to follow his destructive example.
