Immigration spurs comment

This is in response to Jake Longoria’s letter posted April 21.

Filemon Vela leaving — maybe it’s best. At least he won’t be living off your tax dollars. Since Mr. Longoria lives in Mission, Vela never represented his district.

Vela authored two “major” bills. Take the time to read them sometime. I can assure him that the family of Javier Vega are thankful for his work on one bill, as are many families of Border Patrol agents.

There are many elections going on in the country right now. Some due to criminal activity where the constituent had to step down.

As for the Central American migrants, people should research the Geneva Convention and the U.S. Constitution.

As for Vicente Gonzalez, he did not “abandon” his district. The Republican-controlled state decided to redline the state due to the census. This has happened before.

“We the People” welcome all humans. The Geneva Convention allows for this.

And while we are at it, how do people feel about all the Ukrainian immigrants coming into the country now? Are they as upset with those numbers? There have been close to 10,000 Ukrainians processed in the last two months.

Immigration is not only about Central Americans. Take some time and look up the stats on immigration. We welcome people from all over the world.

Response

to letter

On April 24 Imelda Coronado says we are “buying energy from Putin.” The Wall Street Journal reports that the U.S., U.K., Canada and Australia have banned imports of Russian oil.

Ms. Coronado suggests we are looking to Venezuela for fuel sources. We have never stopped buying oil from Venezuela.

She says, “The destructive agenda against America” and mentions climate change. How do climate change and existing professional studies affect only America?

Ms. Coronado “AOC as well as the Al Gores, the Obamas and John Kerrys all keep flying around in supersonic jets” consuming and wasting energy. There has not been a supersonic commercial passenger jet since the Concorde was grounded in 2000.

She also advances another conspiracy theory claiming that the elite “engage in cult-type indoctrination practices” to coerce corporations, government heads, politicians and citizens and that again “they” are violating parental rights by “promoting” a variety of isms both liberal and conservative, all of which do not measure up to her tiny view of a very large world.

Ms. Coronado maintains that even during the past and current absence of parental guidance and control (day care for all) it is not the state’s responsibility to maintain order by telling people what to do. Wrong. Just because mom and pop have abdicated the throne of parenthood does not mean we can let our children suffer lack of information about today’s, not the ’50s, complex world. If you want to teach your children to be bigots that’s up to you; just don’t ask our country to do it for you.

However, Ms. Coronado, thank you for writing that letter.

Thanks,

governors

Some patriots. Several weeks into his perverse vendetta against the Biden administration, Gov. Greg Abbott finally saw sense and halted his “enhanced state inspections” at the “frontera” between Mexico and Texas.

Mind you, nothing untoward was found. Then again, governors have little jurisdiction over commercial traffic at the border. Most of the so-called “inspections” involved nothing more than checking tire pressure, oil leaks and maybe brakes. But the result damaged relations with Mexico (our most lucrative trading partner), generated a strike by the Mexican truckers and hours of delay to a supply chain already reeling because of COVID-19. Inflation immediately worsened. Thanks, fella.

The cost to the Texas taxpayer is calculated at more than $4 billion in lost revenue in clothing, car parts and rotting produce that has harmed businesses around the country. On the other hand, the immigrants got a “free” bus ride at Texans’ expense to Washington D.C., putting them much closer to their preferred destinations on the east coast, especially, apparently, to Florida.

Meanwhile, in Florida, Gov. Ron DeSantis is waging a “culture war” against Disney for voicing dissent to his “don’t say gay” laws. He is pulling Disney’s self-governing status of nearly 60 years, whereby the company paid for its own police and firefighting entities. The cost to the surrounding counties is estimated at $1 billion — to be picked up by the local taxpayers. Thanks, fella.

DeSantis plays Costello to Abbott and both of them are fast becoming the Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum of doom in their respective states. Thanks, fellas.
