Reading students in San Benito host annual shoe drive

Students in San Benito Veterans Memorial Academy (VMA) Reading teacher Olga Reyes’ classes will be hosting their ninth annual shoe drive.  This year, however, the shoe drive will be a Sneakers and Socks Drive and will be held from Wednesday, Aug. 25 through Wednesday, Oct. 6.

The community service project will benefit local Communities in Schools (CIS) students and the San Benito Food Pantry.

The community is encouraged to participate by donating new or gently used sneakers, shoes, and socks in all sizes for children, ladies, and men.  Items can be dropped off at the main office of VMA, located at 2115 N. Williams Road in San Benito.

Reyes focuses her teaching through powerful life changing pieces of literature and strongly supports her students in community service projects.  In turn, her students experience teachable moments while helping others, engaging with the community, and setting a great example for their classmates.

“My students and I are looking forward to this great event and the continued support we are able to give our community through CIS and the local food pantry,” said Reyes.
