BPUB awards scholarships to local high school seniors

The Brownsville Public Utilities Board awarded 10 $1,000 scholarships to local graduating high school seniors who will attend an accredited university this fall.

The scholarships are part of BPUB’s Project SHARE, which was created in 1985 to assist the community, according to the official website. BPUB began a scholarship program in 2005 for students living in BPUB-serviced homes and has since been providing financial assistance toward students’ college education, a BPUB press release reads.

“Because BPUB understands the value of gaining a higher education, monies from the Project SHARE program are allocated to a scholarship fund whereby deserving graduating high school seniors are awarded scholarships,” it reads.

Scholarship recipients are required to fill out an application that lists grades, extracurricular activities and a 500-word essay, among other things. All recipients are required to reside in a household that receives any of BPUB’s three utilities services.

In recent years, ExGen Renewables Partners has assisted BPUB in funding these scholarships. ExGen Renewables Partners owns the Sendero Wind Project, and BPUB owns all of the clean electricity that it generates. Like BPUB, ExGen Renewables Partners is committed to giving back to the communities that it serves, the press release reads.
