$6 million project to transform Sams Stadium

Demolition is under way to transform the entrance to Sams Memorial Stadium, add new restroom facilities, create about 250 additional parking spaces and modernize the stadium where Brownsville Independent School District high schools play their home football games hold track meets and graduation ceremonies.

BISD has been working on the project for about two years and is now at the point of removing buildings around the stadium to make way for the changes. The city of Brownsville is the permitting entity.

The project encompasses a two-block area from Second to Fourth streets and Elizabeth to Washington streets.

The new entrance will be behind the Sams Stadium scoreboard, District Architect Manuel Hinojosa said.  There will be a drive-through drop-off area.

The project also includes new restrooms for home and visiting teams, as well as concession areas for each, and removes the existing concession areas from underneath the stands. The new restrooms will be physically separate from the stadium.

Completion is projected for late fall at a cost of about $6 million.
