The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced on Friday $5.5 billion in funding to local programs throughout the country that provide affordable housing, community development and economic opportunity, and support to individuals and families experiencing homelessness.

In Texas, communities across the state will share $392,578,698. Of that amount, $20,673,620 was given to six Valley cities and one county.

Valley grants:

>> Pharr – $1,142,161

>> San Benito – $387,786

>> Hidalgo County – $10,449,043

The HUD money was awarded as Community Development Block Grants (CDBG); CDBG Recovery Housing Program (RHP); HOME Investment Partnerships (HOME); Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA); and Emergency Solutions Grants (ESG).
