Manuel Faustino Martinez

A 16-year-old has been charged as an adult for the May 2023 murder of a 22-year-old man in Cameron Park.

A Cameron County grand jury on Dec. 6 indicted Manuel Faustino Martinez on a charge of murder for the May 13, 2023 fatal shooting of Jose Alejandro Castillo Villarreal.

He is also facing two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon for threatening two other people with a gun and a charge of deadly conduct discharge firearm for shooting in the direction of four people, including Castillo, according to the indictment.

In a news release following the shooting, the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to a residence in Cameron Park that day at around 4:03 a.m. in regards to someone being shot.

“Upon arriving, Deputies found the deceased body of a male subject with multiple gunshot wounds,” the release stated.

Castillo had fled the area, but was later located and arrested.

He was initially transported to the Darrell B. Hester Juvenile Justice Center.

Now, he’s being held in the Cameron County Carrizales-Rucker Detention Center on more than $500,000 in bonds.

He is scheduled to be arraigned in late January.
