COVID hospitalizations decline but 16 more deaths reported

The number of COVID-19 hospitalizations in Hidalgo County continue to decline, though both Hidalgo and Cameron counties continue to report deaths among their residents.

The last time Hidalgo County reported their COVID hospitalization figures, a total of 94 patients were hospitalized with COVID. As of Thursday, though, that has dropped by 34% to 62 patients, according to a news release issued by the county Friday.

The 62 patients included 57 adults and five children. Of those, 14 adults and one child were in intensive care units.

While COVID-19 hospitalizations saw a drop, Hidalgo County reported 11 more COVID-related deaths over the last 10 days.

Of those individuals, all were over 70 years old and none were up to date with their COVID vaccinations, the county reported.

There have now been approximately 4,080 Hidalgo County residents who have died due to COVID-related complications since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Cameron County health officials reported five COVID-related deaths from the period of Jan. 28 through Friday. All of those residents were at least 60 years old and only one was fully vaccinated.

The county has now reported a total of 2,336 COVID-related deaths.

As for cases, Hidalgo County reported 1,162 new cases from Jan. 24 through Feb. 2. Those cases include 500 confirmed and 662 probable cases.

In Cameron County, health officials reported 406 new cases from Jan. 28 through Feb. 3. Those cases include 104 confirmed, 299 probable, and three self-reported cases from at-home tests.
