U.S. Rep. Monica De La Cruz was appointed vice chair of the House Financial Services’ Housing Subcommittee Thursday.

The subcommittee is part of the House Committee on Financial Services, which oversees the housing and financial services sectors, including banking, insurance, real estate, public and assisted housing, and securities.

De La Cruz’s appointment was announced Friday in a news release.

“You hope to never file an insurance claim. But in my insurance career, I worked with Texans to make sure they were protected from life’s curveballs and tragedies,” De La Cruz said in the news release.

Now that she represents Texas’ 15th Congressional District, she said she will bring the same care and compassion to Washington D.C.

“I am proud to be appointed Vice Chair of the Housing and Insurance Subcommittee, where I will use my expertise to ensure Americans are protected through the policies we enforce and enact,” she said. “I will also hold the industry accountable when necessary and will always work with homeowners and the insured top of mind. I thank Chairman McHenry and House leadership for this opportunity to serve and use my expertise.”

De La Cruz, R-McAllen, was elected to Congress in Nov. 2022, making her the first Latina and first Republican to represent the 15th Congressional District of Texas.

She had previously owned and operated a State Farm Insurance agency in Alamo. She was awarded the President’s Club award, earning her the distinction as one of the top 50 insurance agents in the United States.
