Pharr man sentenced to 35 years for fatal shooting at Mission drive-thru

Juan Jose Trevino

A Pharr man has been sentenced to prison after he shot and killed a 19-year-old woman at a drive-thru in rural Mission in 2021 when he went to confront his ex-girlfriend who worked at the business.

Juan Jose Trevino, 21, was convicted on Wednesday of murder for the Oct. 29, 2021, shooting that killed Wendy Acosta Escobedo at the El Paraiso Drive-Thru located at 6 Mile Line and La Homa Road.

Trevino received 35 years in prison with 452 days in credit.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to the drive-thru at around 7:59 p.m. that day in reference to a woman who had sustained a gunshot wound to her head. She was airlifted to a local hospital where she remained in critical condition.

Trevino was charged with murder after Escobedo was removed from life support. She died on Nov. 9.

The probable cause affidavit stated that Trevino showed up at the drive-thru to confront his ex-girlfriend who was an employee there. He also wanted to fight other men there.

After a verbal altercation with another woman, Trevino drove away while shooting at several people at the drive-thru.

“Witnesses state Juan Jose left the northbound on … La Homa Road and they then heard gunshots coming from the north side,” the affidavit said. “Sheriff’s Investigators located Juan Jose Trevino who confessed to shooting at the individuals outside of El Paraiso Drive Thru, striking Wendy.”

Trevino was taken into custody without incident and admitted to authorities to discharging his handgun at a group of people standing outside the drive-thru.

Now that he has been sentenced, authorities will transfer Trevino to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
