An Edinburg man held on $800,000 in bonds is asking for a bond reduction after being accused of killing a woman in a wrong-way crash on Christmas in 2021.
Edinburg police charged Otis Charles Barron, 30, with intoxicated manslaughter, accident involving death, two counts of intoxicated assault with vehicle and two counts of accident involving serious bodily injury.
The crash occurred in the area of Trenton Road and Professional Drive at around 2:28 a.m., which caused the death of Sylvia Martinez De Garza and injured two passengers in the car she was driving, including one who suffered a broken leg.
According to police, Barron, who was driving a black 2011 Nissan Titan, crossed into the oncoming lane in the 400 block of west Trenton and hit Martinez’s 2013 Nissan Sentra head-on.
The probable cause affidavit states that Barron left his vehicle at the scene and proceeded to travel on foot to a hospital to get medical attention. He was later arrested at his residence in the 1700 block of N. McColl Road.
Investigators were able to determine that Barron was the suspect after running the plates on his vehicle which also included his address.
With that information, police went to Barron’s residence where an officer noticed his back door was unsecured, which allowed said police to find personal information at the residence that belonged to Barron, according to the affidavit.
Once Barron arrived home, he voluntarily told police that he was the one involved in the crash and that he had the keys to his truck, according to police.
Police said he was covered in dry mud and that his clothing was disorderly.
The affidavit states he walked home after going to the hospital and had red blood shot eyes, slurred speech and smelled of alcohol.
In addition, Barron allegedly confessed to police to being the driver and leaving the scene of the crash.
Barron is set to appear before state District Judge Keno Vasquez Tuesday morning for the hearing.
