A 33-year-old Brownsville woman was arrested by police after she was accused of striking another woman who was holding her 2-year-old daughter in her arms.

Ofelia Christine Monares, 33, is charged and arrested on warrants charging her with assault, injury to a child, criminal mischief, and child endangerment.

Investigator Martin Sandoval, spokesman for the Brownsville Police Department, said Monares stopped at the woman’s apartment on New Year’s Day, while the woman was carrying her toddler daughter.

“The victim’s back was facing that parking lot. Monares started to punch the victim several times while the victim was carrying the child,” Sandoval said.

“Monares started scratching the victim’s face and struck the child’s head. Monares continued the assault without any concern for the child,” Sandoval said.

Monares left the location before police arrived.

Sandoval said the police department’s Criminal Investigations Unit secured warrants for her arrest, and she was taken into custody on Tuesday. She was arraigned Wednesday on the charges and her bonds totaled $30,000.
