McAllen airport spared of major delays in nationwide system outage

McAllen International Airport was largely spared of the thousands of flight delays throughout the U.S. Wednesday morning that followed a Federal Aviation Administration system outage.

There were a few flight delays at the McAllen airport but by 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, the system was back and there was no further impact, according to the city’s airport director, Elizabeth Suarez.

The McAllen airport experienced a total of eight flight delays on Wednesday, according to FlightAware, an online flight tracker. Four of those were departing flights from McAllen while the other three were arrivals from Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.

U.S. Rep. Monica De La Cruz, R-McAllen, issued a statement saying she was aware and monitoring the situation at local airports.

“This morning, I spoke with the leaders of McAllen International Airport and the South Texas International Airport and offered them my full support in dealing with the federal government following the FAA’s system failure,” De La Cruz said. “I am closely monitoring this situation. Congress must work with the Federal Aviation Administration to obtain a full account of what caused this outage and ensure the safety of U.S. passengers and flights.”

The FAA had experienced an overnight outage to their Notice of Air Missions system which they said serves to provide safety to flight crews.

Due to the system outage, the FAA ordered airlines to pause all domestic departures until 9 a.m. Eastern Time “to allow the agency to validate the integrity of flight and safety information,” the agency said in an update on Twitter early Wednesday.

In their latest update, the FAA said normal air traffic operations were gradually resuming across the country and the order to ground flights had been lifted.

“We continue to look into the cause of the initial problem,” the FAA wrote.
