Hidalgo County GOP welcomes Republican appellate judge

The Hidalgo County GOP has congratulated newly sworn-in Justice for the 13th Court of Appeals Aaron Peña.

Peña, who is a former member of the Texas House of Representatives, was sworn in on New Year’s Day and was joined by local elected officials, supporters and family members.

He served as Chairman of the Committee of Criminal Jurisprudence, the Chairman of the Select Committee on Emergency Preparedness and the Chairman of the Committee of Technology.

Once Peña retired from the Texas House of Representatives, he served in the legal divisions of the Texas Department of Agriculture and the Texas General Land Office.

According to a news release, Peña filed paperwork to start his candidacy to be a justice on Oct. 4, 2021.

“You have disagreements but they aren’t personal,” Peña said during his closing remarks. “Those of us in the political realm can learn from that. The way this community advances is by loving each other and following the rules and instructions by the Lord, that we may love one another.”

The Hidalgo GOP is motivated and looking forward to continuing to serve the community and help bring prosperity to South Texas, the release stated.

McAllen attorney Roberto Cantu stated that elections in the Rio Grande Valley have been one-sided for years and hopes Peña’s swearing in to be a turning point.

“Recent elections have brought a much needed and improved political balance to the region,” Robert Cantu said. “Hopefully that momentum continues.”
