Mission man dies in ATV rollover crash Friday

The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating a crash that left a Mission man dead after he lost control of the ATV he was driving.

Jose Veliz Jr., 45, died after losing control of an ATV while not wearing a helmet, police said, adding it was a single-vehicle crash.

According to the release, the incident occurred Friday at about 10:50 p.m. on Madrid Drive south of Milan Drive, which is just north of Mission.

Police say that preliminary investigation reveals that Veliz was traveling northbound on Madrid Drive toward Milan at an unsafe speed and lost control of the vehicle.

“The rider lost control of the ATV and went onto two wheels, tossing him off the ATV and onto the street,” authorities said in the release.

Veliz died of his injuries.

DPS encourages the public to wear helmets, goggles, long sleeves and pants, over-the-ankle boots and gloves to ensure one’s safety while riding an ATV, and to not ride on paved roads except when crossing safely and where permitted by law.
