Sanders to attend rally at Cine El Rey

Details of U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders’ planned visit to the Rio Grande Valley this weekend were announced Monday.

The progressive Vermont senator will be attending a Get Out the Vote rally on Sunday to support Michelle Vallejo, the Democratic nominee for Texas’ 15th congressional district.

The rally will be hosted by Ground Game Texas, an organization that pushes for progressive initiatives in cities throughout the state; Texas AFL-CIO, a federation of labor unions; and the Working Families Party, a small political party that supports progressive issues.

Greg Casar, who’s running for Texas’ 35th congressional district, and Jessica Cisneros, who unsuccessfully challenged U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar in the Democratic primary election, will be joining Sanders and Vallejo at the rally.

Juanita Valdez-Cox, the executive director of La Union Del Pueblo Entero, will also be attending.

There will be no press availability at the event.

Sanders will be visiting the Valley amid the early voting period for the November midterm elections which began Monday.

Vallejo is running in the most competitive congressional race in the state against Monica De La Cruz, the Republican nominee who earned the backing of former President Donald J. Trump during the primary and, more recently, from Gov. Greg Abbott.

The rally will be held this Sunday at Cine El Rey in downtown McAllen.

Doors will open at 10 a.m. and the rally is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
