The Sharyland Pioneer girls water polo team and the American flag are reflected in the pool at the city of Pharr Natatorium on Monday — a sight to behold as the opportunity to compete here was only recently made possible.

The Diamondbacks played Harlingen South in the bi-district round of the first Texas UIL water polo playoffs.

Four girls matches were held Monday and four boys matches will take place Tuesday at the natatorium.

It is the first season of UIL water polo for both boys and girls across Texas.

Harlingen South advanced to the second round of the playoffs with a 19-0 win. Other winners from Monday’s bi-district girls round included Harlingen High and PSJA High.

Mission Veterans played PSJA Memorial in the final playoff game of the match Monday night.
