Rocky Horror Picture Show returns to McAllen for October run

McALLEN — Cine el Rey is bringing the “Rocky Horror Picture Show” back to McAllen for its 13th annual October run.

Produced by the Pluma Blanca Community Theatre, this year’s show will be an “interactive experience,” according to event materials, and will be held every Saturday night in October beginning this weekend. Doors will open at 10 p.m.

Located at 311 S 17th St. in McAllen, Cine el Rey will once again host the show made famous by the 1970s cult classic — which starred Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick and Meat Loaf — and will include “elaborate costumes and prop bags.”

“We cheer the increase of visibility of LGBTQ+ people in Texas, especially at a time when state legislators would prohibit some forms of queer visibility,” Heather Diaz, co-director of the 2022 production, said in a news release. “By proudly uplifting our culture through this show, we support our community in moving past stereotypes and ignorance.”

Jackelin Treviño is Pluma Blanca’s founding director who launched the company in 2015 and who co-directed the 2022 show together with Diaz.

Treviño said Pluma Blanca’s goal is to “uplift civic engagement and social justice through the art and process of collaborative” theater, and noted that this will also be the event’s first since before the pandemic.

“We hope you will join us as we celebrate our return to the stage and the Rocky Horror Picture Show space after a two-year hiatus due to (COVID-19).” Trevino said in the release.

Tickets are $15 during the presale and $25 at the door on the day of the show, and can be purchased at https://bit.ly/PBCTRockyHorror2022.
