Elsa police coax stabbing suspect off roof, arrest him

ELSA — Police here arrested a 41-year-old man they accuse of stabbing a 35-year-old woman in the face and neck area.

In a Facebook post, police said the incident happened at approximately 10:33 a.m. Wednesday.

Officers were dispatched to the 400 block of E. 3rd St. in reference to a screaming woman.

When police arrived, she identified Benito Gonzalez, of Elsa, as her attacker, according to the post.

The woman was transported to DHR Health in Edinburg, where she was treated and later released.

“A search of the area was conducted and Gonzalez was located on the roof of a residence in that area,” police said. “Officers were able to talk Gonzalez off the roof and he was taken into custody without incident.”

Gonzalez was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon/family member.

He received a $500,000 bond and remained held Friday at the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center.
