It was a scary situation at several San Benito schools Monday afternoon when three of them were placed on either lockdown status or secure status, the San Benito school district posted on its Facebook page.

San Benito High School and Berta Cabaza Middle School were placed on lockdown status and San Benito Veterans Memorial Academy on secure status after officials received reports of gunshots being fired near the high school campus, the Facebook posting stated.

Although no evidence of actual gunshots being fired were found, school district and San Benito police officers remained on site to conduct a thorough investigation.

According to the district, lockdown status means, “Locks, lights, out of sight.” A secure status means, “Get inside. Lock outside doors.”

“The lockdown! and secure! actions were immediately taken as a precautionary measure. All students and staff were safe at all times,” the Facebook posting stated.
