Man arrested for stealing propane tanks from Weslaco business for nearly a month

Surveillance video showed the suspect jumping the fence and throwing propane tanks into the back of his truck

An upset business owner, a license plate reader and strategically placed surveillance cameras helped capture a thief stealing propane tanks for weeks from a local business.

David Hernandez, 65, from Weslaco, was arrested and accused of stealing small propane tanks from Blue Rhino Ferrellgas in Weslaco.

The general manager reported to police that he suspected the robberies started Aug. 17, according to the probable cause affidavit.

Although the business’ surveillance was limited, Hernandez was seen jumping the fence and throwing propane tanks into the back of his truck. He was able to access a side of the property through a small road off of Milanos Road.

A license plate reader was placed nearby to identify the truck if the driver came back.

On Sept. 5, police were called back to the business where another theft was reported. The manager reported 30 full propane tanks valued at $50 each were missing from their inventory. Police noted fresh tire tracks that led out through an open field onto Business 83.

Police checked with businesses around the area the next day and were able to obtain surveillance video that helped match the truck’s description with the license plate.

Hernandez was later arrested and interrogated on Sept. 7. According to the affidavit, Hernandez said he was given the theft job by a friend after his friend pointed out the location. Hernandez said his friend paid him $100 per propane tank load.

A $10,000 cash surety bond was set. As of Friday, Hidalgo County jail records show Hernandez has not yet been released.
