McAllen celebrates monarch conservation with mural unveiling

The city of McAllen unveiled its newest mural Wednesday at Quinta Mazatlán, which celebrates the restoration and conservation initiatives of the monarch butterfly.

The mural, named “Destino Monarco,” was created to detail the “natural and cultural history” of the Rio Grande Valley, McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos said in a statement.

The colorful mural was painted by Irving Cano, a Zapotec artist from Oaxaca, Mexico who has produced works of art in McAllen before.

Cano recently participated in McAllen’s MXLAN event, where he painted a mural full of vibrant colors that reflect the beauty of Oaxacan culture.

In his newest mural, his dedication to color and culture allowed him to highlight the uniqueness of the monarch butterfly,

Cano’s ultimate message: it’s in our hands to protect the monarchs.
