Forecasters monitoring tropical wave that could impact the RGV

The Rio Grande Valley could experience additional rain this weekend, as the National Hurricane Center continues to monitor a tropical wave that is expected to move over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico.

The tropical wave located over Nicaragua is forecast to move over Central America over the next few days and emerge over the Bay of Campeche, the National Weather Service in Brownsville/Rio Grande Valley reports.

The NWS reports an area of low pressure could form Friday and some gradual development of the system is possible while it moves northwestward over the southern Gulf of Mexico through the weekend.

Although the chances of development are at 20%, forecasters urge residents to closely monitor the situation for any significant developments.

The NWS reports the main potential impacts for South Texas include heavy rains across portions of the area that may lead to flooding concerns for areas already saturated by rain that fell this past weekend; elevated risk for rip currents later this week and into the weekend; and elevated swells that may cause concerns for mariners along the lower Texas coast.

Many areas of the Valley this past weekend received anywhere from 2 to 4 inches with some areas reporting higher amounts, and with many cities implementing water contingency plans.

Weather forecasters said all any rain is beneficial.
