Motorcyclist dies after trying to avoid hitting a dog

A man was killed early Thursday morning after he lost control of his motorcycle and was subsequently run over by another vehicle.

According to Alamo Police Chief Richard Ozuna, his department received a call at approximately 2:15 a.m. about a traffic collision along the frontage road for Interstate Highway 2 near Tower Road in Alamo.

Upon arrival, police learned that a man in his mid-20s had been riding a motorcycle heading eastbound on the frontage road. Investigators learned that a dog crossed the road in front of the man, and in an effort to avoid hitting the dog, the man swerved out of the way, but lost control and was thrown off of the motorcycle onto the road.

Alamo police later identified him as 29-year-old Vicente Ortiz Jr., of Donna.

“Who knows how long he was there,” Ozuna said. “It’s dark. Another vehicle passed by, didn’t see him, and ran over him. They immediately pulled off to the side.”

The driver of the other vehicle was identified as an elderly woman from Weslaco. She, along with a passenger, stopped and called emergency services, according to police.

“It was too late,” Ozuna said. “He was deceased.”

The Texas Department of Public Safety was called to assist in the investigation. According to the police chief, the woman is not facing any criminal charges at the moment.

“The driver of the motor vehicle is not facing any criminal charges at this time,” Ozuna said. “There was no signs of any intoxicants or smell of alcohol — under the influence or anything like that whatsoever.”

Ozuna advised drivers to stop and render aid if faced with a similar situation.

“The driver stopped immediately, and that’s the best thing to do,” Ozuna added. “Unfortunately the outcome was devastating, but sometimes if you stop to render aid we could get there quickly with medical help. It could save a life.”
