La Joya man charged in fatal ‘self defense’ shooting in McAllen

Gerardo Chapa

McAllen police arrested a 30-year-old La Joya man who told authorities he shot a man in self defense on Monday.

In a news release issued Tuesday, police said Gerardo Chapa was charged with murder.

On Monday, police said Chapa called to report the shooting as an act of self defense. Officers took him into custody that same day and he was later charged with the first-degree felony.

The shooting appears to have happened near a business in the 2000 block of Redbud Avenue about 3:35 p.m. Monday. Police, however, did not disclose the name of the business and distanced it from the shooting.

Chapa has not yet been arraigned and the identity of the alleged victim is still pending a positive identification.
