Edinburg’s FridaFest kicked off Friday and continues into Saturday with festive and colorful events that pay tribute to beloved Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.

This year’s event, held at the Edinburg City Hall Courtyard on 415 W. University Drive in Edinburg, also celebrates what the city of Edinburg called the “spirit of perseverance and empowerment” for the two-day event, which is open to the public and features live performances, look-alike contests and, of course, art.

Local art will be exhibited at the courtyard, where all artwork will be available for sale, the city said in a news release.

There’s also the usual food and children’s activities festival-goers in the Rio Grande Valley have come to expect from events such as FridaFest, which this year will include live music on two stages.

Other activities include dance and live art demonstrations in addition to a zoo and animal exhibit, and a cooling station will be provided for relief from the rising temperatures.

This year’s event features a “Frida Gathering” on the main stage.

“Join us as we celebrate women from the community who have made an impact and a difference in their respective fields while highlighting their accomplishments…” a city release read. “FridaFest honors womanhood, and celebrates the strong women in our lives! As such, the City of Edinburg invites all women to attend and join in the celebration.”
