The Texas Department of Public Safety said an Edinburg teen was speeding early Saturday morning when she lost control of her vehicle and crashed into a utility pole.

Jasmine Lorrane Heredia, 17, died at the scene, DPS said in a news release Tuesday.

The fatal single-vehicle crash happened north of Wisconsin Road on Tower Road at approximately 3:36 a.m. Saturday.

A preliminary investigation indicates that Heredia drove a 1999 Ford Expedition northbound on Tower Road at an unsafe speed and failed to drive in a single lane, traveling onto the east side of the roadway and then veering to the left, causing the vehicle to travel into a right side skid before crashing into a utility police, according to the release.

DPS on Saturday said troopers continue to investigate the crash.
