Ismael Medrano

A 51-year-old Edinburg man accused of killing his wife after seeing a photo of her embracing another man is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday morning on a charge of murder.

A Hidalgo County grand jury indicted Ismael Medrano on May 17.

That document alleges Medrano had strangled his wife two months prior on March 17.

The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office arrested Medrano after he called 9-1-1 at 10:13 a.m. that day and confessed to killing his wife, 49-year-old Maria Garza.

A probable cause affidavit for his arrest said Garza was found dead on a bed at her residence in the 2900 block of Davis Road. She had lacerations to her body and Medrano was found lying next to her with a knife in his hands and lacerations on his arms and neck.

During the investigation, Medrano’s adult son said he and his father received a photo from an unknown number that showed Garza embracing another man, according to the affidavit.

Investigators said the son asked Garza about the photo before her death.

She told him the photo had been edited, according to the affidavit.

Medrano remains jailed at the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center on a $1 million bond.
