A judge on Wednesday sentenced a 43-year-old Edinburg man to four decades in prison for sexually abusing a child.
The Hidalgo County District Attorney’s Office said in a news release that Jorge Moreno went to trial between March 31 and April 8 on a charge of continuous sexual abuse of a child.
The jury convicted him April 8 and state District Judge Noe Gonzalez sentenced him to 40 years in prison Wednesday.
McAllen police arrested Moreno on Aug. 30, 2018, for allegations of sexually abusing an extended family member who was between the age of 8 and 10 when the abuse occurred, according to the news release.
Jail records list the offense date as Sept. 1, 2011.
Special Crimes Division Chief Hope Palacios and assistant district attorney Ricardo Hernandez prosecuted the case. The news release said the McAllen Police Department, the Children’s Advocacy Center of Hidalgo and Starr counties and the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services assisted the state.
“I commend Chief Hope Palacios and ADA Ricardo Hernandez for getting this violent offender off our streets and out of our community,” District Attorney Ricardo Rodriguez Jr. said in the release. “I hope this conviction brings a sense of justice and closure to the victim and their family.”
