RIO GRANDE CITY — U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar held a tight lead against progressive challenger Jessica Cisneros Tuesday night in the Democratic primary runoff in District 28 with all precincts reporting.

Cuellar had a slight lead with 50.2% or 22,694 total votes which was just 177 more than what Cisneros received, according to unofficial numbers posted by the Texas Secretary of State’s office.

The congressman was quick to declare victory, issuing a statement saying he was “honored to have once again been re-elected as the Democratic Nominee for Congress.”

In addition to thanking his supporters and family, Cuellar congratulated Cisneros on the hard-fought campaign.

“I look forward to working with her, and all Texans of the 28th district, to help move forward and win in November!” his statement read.

Cisneros issued a statement early Wednesday morning saying the race is too close to call and is waiting for “every ballot and eligible vote to be counted.”

Just in Starr County, Cuellar received the majority of the votes, more than 80%, while Cisneros received just over 19% of the votes, according to unofficial numbers announced by the county officials here.

In the Republican primary runoff for District 28, Cassy Garcia won the nomination with nearly 57% of the votes, or a total of 8,483 votes, while Sandra Whitten had 43% of the votes, according to the state’s unofficial numbers.

In Starr County alone, Garcia received 57% of the votes, or 112 votes, while Whitten received about 43% of the votes there, or a total of 83 votes.

“I want to thank Texas-28 for your support tonight and choosing me to be your nominee,” Garcia stated Tuesday. “We have a lot of work to do, but we will do it together. We don’t know our opponent yet, but we will flip this seat and win in November.”
