COVID-19 hospitalizations throughout the Rio Grande Valley swung up and down this week while county officials reported six more COVID-related deaths and more than 550 new cases.

The Valley started out with 32 people hospitalized due to COVID-19 on Monday, the lowest COVID hospitalizations have been all year. But that number immediately went up the next day with 36 people reportedly being hospitalized for COVID-19 on Tuesday, according to data from the Texas Department of State Health Services, or DSHS.

On Wednesday, COVID hospitalizations went up again to 37 total patients but then decreased on Thursday when there were 34 total patients throughout the Valley. On Friday, the total patients went down again to 33 patients.

The 33 people hospitalized on Friday included 21 adults, another nine adults in intensive care units, and three pediatric patients.

Zooming in on Hidalgo County, hospitalizations here also had ups and downs this week.

Hospitalizations due to COVID in the county were at 20 on Monday, dropped to 17 on Wednesday, and then ticked up to 19 on Thursday where it remained through Friday.

The 19 patients on Friday that were hospitalized due to COVID throughout the county included 13 adults, six pediatric patients. Of the adult patients, six were in intensive care units.

In addition to their hospitalizations, Hidalgo County reported the deaths of two residents due to COVID-related complications. One of the deceased was fully vaccinated while the other was not.

By week’s end, the county had a total of 3,910 COVID-19 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

The county also reported 324 new cases of COVID-19 this week. Of those, 157 were confirmed cases and 167 probable cases.

As of Friday, the county reported a total of 200,290 cases — 128,671 confirmed, 68,460 probable, and 3,159 suspected cases — since the start of the pandemic.

Cameron County reported four COVID-related deaths this week among their residents and three of them were not vaccinated against COVID.

Additionally, the county had 166 new cases this week which included 105 confirmed cases, 60 probable cases, and one self-reported case that resulted from an at-home test.

Starr County reported 25 confirmed cases and 20 probable cases this week, according to DSHS data.

Meanwhile, Willacy County reported four confirmed cases and 13 probable cases this week.
