A former Border Patrol agent entered a guilty plea to striking an unaccompanied 17-year-old Honduran teenager.

The United States Attorneys Office for the Southern District of Texas said Brownsville resident Gregson Martinez admitted to acting under color of law when he used unreasonable force on the teenager.

According to a news release, authorities apprehended the teen on July 21, 2021 near Hidalgo and transported him to the Donna processing center where Martinez worked as a processing coordinator.

Federal authorities say Martinez struck the 17-year-old across the face while questioning him as to his age and citizenship.

Border Patrol fired Martinez on Aug. 2 of that year.

Gregson is scheduled to be sentenced on June 24.

He faces up to a year in prison and is currently on bond pending sentencing.
