Multiple law enforcement agencies are searching for a man convicted for capital murder in Hidalgo County who escaped custody on Thursday while being transported from a state facility in west Texas.

Gonzalo Lopez, 46, assaulted a corrections officer on a transport bus and fled from the vehicle in Leon County, according to information from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

Law enforcement officers from the TDCJ, Office of Inspector General and others are searching for Lopez, who is suspected of going westbound near Highway 7 and being about 1.5 miles from Interstate 45.

Lopez was serving a life sentence at the Alfred Hughes correctional facility in Gatesville, Texas for an Hidalgo County capital murder in 2005 and an attempted capital murder in Webb County in 2004.

If Lopez is spotted, the public is asked not to approach him, but instead contact 911 immediately.

Hidalgo County Sheriff Eddie Guerra said TDCJ notified him about Lopez’ escape. The Texas Transnational Intelligence Center put out a notification to be on the lookout and the sheriff contacted the Weslaco and Mercedes police chiefs where Lopez is suspected to have family.
