A man died after shooting himself at a shooting range in Pharr on Wednesday, police said.

According to Pharr police Chief Andy Harvey, the man suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound Wednesday afternoon at the gun range, Point Blank Sporting Goods located at 407 N. Jackson Road in Pharr, using a pistol he’d rented from the establishment.

“We’re still investigating that,” Harvey said. “It’s very, very early, but it does appear that somebody was shot. It does appear to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.”

According to a new release, Pharr police received a call about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.

“Upon arrival, police investigators discovered a 22-year-old man who was injured and unresponsive,” the release read. “He was transported to McAllen Medical Center for medical attention, where was later pronounced dead.”

Police identified the man as Robert Levrier, Jr. of McAllen.

A police investigation concluded that Levrier rented a 9 mm handgun and a box of ammunition before entering the shooting range and firing a few rounds at some targets.

“Surveillance video suggests that the victim then went on to self-inflict a single gunshot,” the release read. It’s unclear where Levrier shot himself.

A preliminary investigation determined that the gunshot was not accidental, Harvey said.

According to Harvey, one shot was fired and nobody else was injured as a result of the shooting.
