Hidalgo County sheriff’s deputies believe drugs played a part in the shooting death of a man in rural Alton on Thursday night.

Deputies began a homicide investigation after they responded to a call in the 1800 block of Chicago Street at 11:56 p.m. Thursday.

When they arrived, they found a man dying from multiple gunshot wounds, Hidalgo County Sheriff J.E. “Eddie” Guerra said on social media Friday. Guerra later identified him as 34-year-old Mission resident Jesus Saenz.

According to Guerra, his office received at least three 911 calls from neighbors who reported hearing shots fired and seeing a man go down. One caller reported a “drive-by shooting,” Guerra said.

When deputies arrived, they found Saenz laying along the fence of a house with multiple gunshot wounds. First responders administered CPR, but the man was declared dead by EMS personnel, Guerra said.

The investigation remained ongoing Friday afternoon.
