A McAllen man was indicted Wednesday for allegedly importing a controlled substance from Brazil, according to a U.S. Attorney’s Office news release.

Mario Alberto Molina was indicted for importing DMT, dimethyltryptamine, from Brazil and is expected to appear before the U.S. Magistrate Judge Nadia Medrano for arraignment.

Authorities conducted a routine inspection of a package originating from Brazil in Miami, where they allegedly found a powdery substance later determined to be nearly 10 pounds of DMT, the complaint stated.

DMT is a powerful hallucinogenic drug with intense effects and is the primary psychoactive ingredient in ayahuasca.

The complaint said the package was marked as natural dye for tie-dye purposes and was allegedly addressed to Molina’s residence.

Law enforcement executed a controlled delivery on April 7 to Molina’s residence where they executed a search warrant afterward and found Molina inside and the package opened, according to the complaint.

Molina is facing up to 20 years in federal prison and a possible $1 million maximum fine if convicted.
